The International Association of Movers has more than two thousand international removal companies as members. These companies are based in over a hundred seventy countries. Such a membership is a good criterion to initiate your search with. Do not consider international removal companies that are not a member of the International Association of Movers, also referred to as IAM, and if you do consider a non-member then you should ensure they are a major player in the industry and is relevant to your needs.
In an attempt to look for the best deals or the most convenient option, we often forget the significance of relevance. Very few international removal companies have a truly global presence. Most are regional players. A massive majority is only good when you are moving to or from a country where they are based. While quite a few international removal companies have multiple offices in more than one country, you should still check if the country you are traveling to or from is indeed one where they have a physical presence. It is one thing to know for certain that the removal company will be attending to your needs and a completely different reality to deal with partner organizations or third parties during the process.
Not all international removal companies are packers and movers. Many may actually be specialists in logistics, which is somewhat of an advantage because removals do rely heavily on logistics and the various related services. Look for international removal companies that specialize in private as well as company or corporate relocations, accept the fact that the firm may need a network of partners to operate across regions and continents but be aware of the credibility of such a network, look for all inclusive services and the probable need for storage. The company with a completely owned infrastructure and preferably its own global network will be a better option than one which relies almost entirely or substantially on third parties that they have no control over.
Not all international removal companies will be as deft in freight services via air, sea and land. Some may encourage you to take a route that they are comfortable with. This can be costly if cheaper alternatives exist. Consider the volume of goods the company deals with every year or their capacity. You don’t want to hire any removal company that gets overwhelmed with what you have. If you want any additional services, such as real estate consultation or inspections of properties, then consider those at the outset.
